Dear Mentor,

During the first days of class, I was very hesitant to attend the ENGLCOM class because English is my least favorite subject since high school. It was one of my lowest subjects in the sense that I wonder if I still have any talents in this world. During the three months of the term, I think my writing capabilities became wider and wider. I become a more srious student in the sense that it did not take too long for me to understand and make essays about the topics the professor is giving us.

Probably, the hardest essay that was given to us to be written in the blog was the argumentative essay. Unlike the extended definition essay where we are capable of choosing topics that are easy enough for us to understand, the argumentative essay really made me think of what kind of words am I going to put in the certain sentence so that when someone would read it. It will not be so very awkward. That is why I am thanking the mentor because of the guidance that you have given me. Somewhat you enlightened my mind that quitting is not the solution for every problem that comes my way. I am very privileged that somehow, I gained confidence with the works that I made. I really enjoyed writing the extended definition essay. Even if writing is not my forte, that essay game me a reason why I am writing that kind of essay. With the blogging experience, I commend you Ms. Mentor that it somewhat game me an idea on how to put a smile to someone else’s face by showing my works. As your student, I would also like to comment on your teaching skills because I know that in the future, it might also help you. Always be conscious on the environment since there are also students who are so noisy that even if they are reciting a lot, there is something that might lower them down which is being respectful.

With all those things, I acknowledge you for being a mentor. It has been a busy term for me and I guess I am still privileged that you became my mentor. See you when I see you. . . .

Sincerely,
Jan Derick V. Corporal

Topic: Advertising: Information or Manipulation
Thesis Statement: Although advertisements are now filled with manipulation and pure deception, people should still be aware that advertising is used to inform them to choose wisely the range of products.
I. Introduction
A. Attention-Grabber
B. Thesis Statement
C. The Purpose of Advertising
II. Body
A. Advertising as Information provider
B. Advertising as a Manipulator
III. Conclusion
A. Prevention of the Manipulation of Advertisements
B. Prediction of the Future

Advertising, a process of persuading people in buying products, can provide enough information to the consumers or might as well lure them by manipulation. It is basically  a form of communication used to encourage or persuade an audience may it be considered viewers, readers or listeners; sometimes a specific group of people, to continue or take some new action. Most commonly, the desired result is to drive consumer behavior with respect to a commercial offering, although political and ideological advertising is also common. The purpose of advertising may also be to reassure employees or shareholders that a company is viable or successful. There are two kinds of advertisers, namely the commercial advertisers and the non-commercial advertisers. Commercial advertisers often seek to generate increased consumption of their products or services through "branding," which involves the repetition of an image or product name in an effort to associate certain qualities with the brand in the minds of consumers while non-commercial advertisers who spend money to advertise items other than a consumer product or service include political parties, interest groups, religious organizations and governmental agencies. There are also oversimplifications that state that the only purpose why advertising is present is just to sell a product. It can also take form in the advertising of political parties. For example, there are times that school organizations need to elect a president, vice president or representative. The students use advertising as a means to persuade the other schoolmates to vote for someone because the aspiring person has the quality of something that can lead to improvement or something. But there are times that advertising is misused, rather than to become a means to inform the people about a product or person, people use advertising to manipulate others to do something even if they do not know anything about it.

Nowadays, advertisements are becoming manipulative at times. Some advertisements use fallacies in order to catch the attention of the consumers and perhaps the biggest disadvantage of advertising from the perspective of consumers is that ads can be misleading or make false statements about products and services. Ads sometimes overstate the usefulness or effectiveness of products and services, which can lead consumers to make decisions based on bad information(Amjed, 2010). In some cases ads may be a part of scams aimed at defrauding consumers out of money. Together with the commendable intention of creating awareness and broadening the range of choice to consumers on the availability of products and how these products will affect their lives in a way that it will give the chance for meeting with their needs. Unfortunately, photographers, artists, technicians, and writers are clever enough so that the gimmicks they use in advertising are not seen easily by the consumers, making their product more approachable and maybe useful to the people. There are promises in advertisements which are sometimes not so true. Advertisements play with the emotions of the people, that is why most advertisements are well-equipped with sports, beautiful ladies in their lingerie, famous artists and stars (Mwende, 2005) . There are also times that advertising companies use sexy images to appeal to the masses. Deep down one may be worried indeed about the state of his/her budget - how to make ends meet, on top of that he is been seduced to be modern. Misleading advertisements taps into the imaginations of the people like gaining muscles without exercise, losing weight without eating less, or transforming one’s life when he/she buys a certain product. The advertisers do not even think the fact that in the real world such miracles do not work like that. Advertisers manipulate people by stating that the products they sell are as quick and effective cure-alls, of testimonials claiming ‘amazing results’ or ‘complete transformations’. These tactics are just some on how advertising can provide bad effects to the lives of the consumers.

But the real reason why advertising is used so that it can give the advantage to the consumers, for example, advertising is advantageous in the sense that it does not only positively affect the business but also the consumers. From the business's perspective, advertising has the potential to increase the consumer awareness of their products and services to be rendered. The main tendency if the consumers do not know the company or the company's offering itself with the products, then the costumers will be hesitant to buy the products they promote(LeClaire, 2002). Another example is that when companies are advertising products, it provides or generates demand for their goods and services, which in return, will give them the potential to increase revenue. In the customer's part, the advantage of advertising is that it will give them the chance to increase their range of products and services available. The more they know about the benefits and costs of different products and services in many different places, the better decisions and choices they can make on what to buy. For example, if someone is fond of going to a certain fast-food restaurant, but he/she sees an advertisement for a different restaurant with better prices, he/she could choose to eat at the cheaper business to save money (Keen, 2010). Instead of buying because they feel as if something is better, with the use of advertisements, it can help them think first before choosing a certain product.

Because of the development and modernization of the world, manipulation of advertisements is winning over its real purpose which is to inform people about the range of the acceptability and availability of a certain product. Advertisers use fallacies, strategies, and tactics so that people will be mesmerized to buy a product even though it will merely affect their life, sadly, to the negative side instead of being advantageous. In conclusion, people should be a aware of what is really happening in the industry. They should be aware of the phrases such as “scientific breakthrough’, miraculous cure’, exclusive product’, ‘secret ingredient’ or ‘guaranteed to work’ and treat these claims into caution. They should not let unscrupulous people get their hands on the consumer’s money. The people should let information prevail instead of manipulation. If someone suspects a scam to swindle people out of their cash then they should report it. By helping to expose deceptions, they will be able to protect vulnerable people, and promote advertising that is legal, decent, honest and truthful.

Sigue Lang Sige Na. This was the song that paved way for the development of a famous festival in Bacolod; the festival depicts people as happy ones even if hardships come their way. This event is called Masskara Festival, also known as the Festival of Smiles. It is a 20-day celebration that is defined to attract thousands of people, may it be locally or internationally, because of its colorful costumes and smiling masks. The festival was created as a tool for escapism and a way to generate revenues for big business. It is celebrated yearly between the first and second Sundays of October, and it showcases a variety of merry making, beer drinking, dining and the most celebrated part: the street dancing is a very special event where participants dance in very colorful costumes in the streets of Bacolod (philippinecountry.com).

In the late 1970’s, Negros Occidental, particularly Bacolod, experienced severe crisis. These include the Navigation’s luxury liner-MS Don Juan accident that killed at least a hundred Negros citizens and the periodic downfall of sugar industry -- a primary source of their livelihood. As a result, in the wake of tragedy and economic hardships and the aspiration to pull the residents from the pervasive gloomy atmosphere, government personalities, civic figures and artists with full support from the city government, they decided to create a festival with a primary goal of hiding the sadness and sufferings of Negrenses (byahilo.com). Hence, Masskara Festival was created. From then on, it promoted the city as the “City of Smiles” in order to uplift public spirits and enable them to “keep on smiling” no matter what. Since then, the Masskara Festival, symbolized by smiling masks, has been held every October to celebrate the escapism of the Negrenses to their problems. The term Masskara is a portmanteau, coined by the late artist Ely Santiago from the word “mass” meaning many or a group of people, and the Spanish word “cara” that means face. A prominent and significant item of the festival is the mask worn by the participants in the said activity; therefore, the festival is described to be a multitude of smiling faces making the people somehow escape from the reality that they are experiencing hardships in their life. Masskara Festival was intended as an encouragement to all to fight back and to keep smiling despite the sugar problems, and highlighted that hope still existed.

The said celebration is composed of many features including street dances, pageants, food festivals, sport events, and the like. The main event, which is the street dance competition, is well-equipped with gyrating participants performing under the sun, showing their dancing talents in front of screaming fans and supporters that came from different places. This annual festival, which has become one of Philippines’ best known tourist attraction, has been earning raves both from local and foreign tourists. Masskara Festival has also been judged the most beautiful and colorful festival among the various contingents from other countries. That is why this celebration is considered to be one of the factors why Bacolod is one of the prestigious tourist spots of the Philippines. One of the purposes of the said festival is the preservation of commitment and the will required so that the people can now escape from the hardships and struggles they experience in life. The Masskara Festival itself stands as an example and a role model that a person can consider so that he can achieve what he wants by smiling and not being problematic of what is going on with his life. Another reason for the festival is for economic purposes: During the festival, many people are accommodated to their hotels and restaurants adding up to the income of their businesses. The festival also contributes to the tourism of Bacolod. For example, because of the festival many people from all around the globe try to be part of the celebration. In their part, if they were pleased with what happened in the festival they will tell their friends and boast what happened to them during the celebration. The friends in part will be curious of what really happened and for the next years, they will also be attending the said festival thus increasing the economy of Bacolod. The province earns so much with this festival that there could be possibilities that it can help in the improvement and the development of the place.
Actually, the people are affected physically, mentally, socially and psychologically. The people who participate in the street dance competition are given the chance to have a leaner and fitter kind of body. Just think of it, many months of practice, hardships and synchronization will not give you even a pinch of muscle. There are also times that the stamina of those people joining here is given much more emphasis. The dance itself is already lively meaning it requires a person to have agility and endurance. The festival can possibly change the attitude of the dancers and also the people watching towards the importance of the dance. It may instill to their minds how important the festival is to their life and why the city government of Bacolod is doing their job only to preserve the festival itself. The people can also be affected socially and psychologically in the sense that the festival gives them the chance to interact and mingle with people from different walks of life. It can give them the chance to know what is already happening to their environment through which the festival was created. It can give them the awareness on how people try to change their life and how they make possibilities to live aWONDERFUL life.

There are possibilities that in the next generations, the Festival of Smiles can turn into the Festival of Frowns. It is because of the problems happening in the world, especially in the Philippines, including global warming, corruption, and even poverty, that may lessen the confidence of the people. And, it may instill in their minds that they can never escape the fact that they are experiencing problems in their life. It is up to the people of Bacolod, the Negrenses, to cope with the problems they are encountering. They must challenge themselves to keep the flame of Masskara Festival burning.

Sigue lang Sige na. This was the song that paved way for the development of a famous festival in Bacolod that depicts many people as a very happy person even if hardships come their way. Masskara Festival, also known as the Festival of Smiles, is a 20-day celebration that is defined to attract thousands of people, may it be locally or internationally, because of its colorful costumes and smiling masks. Another reason for the festival is for economic purposes. During the festival, many people are accommodated to their hotels and restaurants adding up to the income of their businesses. The festival also contributes to the tourism of Bacolod. If there is high tourism, there will be high income; if there is high income, there will be enough money for people; if there will be enough money for people, and then there will be no poverty in the Philippines. The province earns so much with this festival that there could be possibilities that it can help in the improvement and the development of the place.

So what are the effects of the festival to the people? Actually, the people are affected physically, mentally, socially and psychologically. The people that in point of fact participate in the actual street dance competition are given the chance to have a leaner and fitter kind of body. Just think of it, many months of practice, hardships and synchronization will not give you even a pinch of muscle. Seriously? Why would you join here if it will no even give you a single benefit? There are also times that the stamina of those people joining here are given much more emphasis in the sense that the dance itself is already lively meaning it requires a person to have agility and endurance. IV. ENGLCOM Goals Essay

A. Final

Help! I Hate Writing

First of all, I hate writing. What is the use of this freaking English even though I am just a mere indio? I was always saying to my friends, "I don't care if English is the universal language, I'll just work here in the Philippines so that it will not be hard for me." I have always said that until I attended the latter part of my high school years where I have experienced cramming, hardships and the need to pass the thesis required for us to submit to graduate. Because of my poor grammar, I began to quit. Until my father told me, "You can never achieve something if you will not be specific of what you want. Start with yourself first, and I will guarantee you that you might achieve what you want. And besides you are doing it for yourself not for anyone that is around you." Because of what my father said, I tried to forget first my hate in English and focus on what I want: To be a SuccessfulCPA Lawyer.

So what is the main purpose of this course? Basically, it yearns for me to learn more, improve more, and develop more things that I need to be prepared of what is supposed to be happening in the outside world. It is as if our guide to become the best that I can be especially in communication. And just like what Rexona is saying in their famous line: “I WON’T LET YOU DOWN.” I think that is what my teacher is also telling me. That she won’t let me down in the sense that because of her, I can now surpass my hate with English and become the best Inglesero in the class.

In order fo me to be better with my writing, I should first set specific goals. First, as what I am talking about almost all the time in this essay. I want to improve my writing abilities. How would clients appeal for my products if the word I use have no connections with my advertisements? If I succeed in this goal, it will be easier for me to think about words that I will apply in essays. Not like in this one, that it took me for almost 20 centuries just to think of an introduction. To improve my critical-thinking skills and knowledge about topics are my second and third goals, respectively. If I improve my English, I would be able to have a more critical and creative mind. It can also help me be updated of what is really changing in the world right now.
So how will I achieve my goals other than writing this essay? First, like what other students want to do, I should read more books and other reading materials.  If I read these materials, the words that I digest may help me improve my vocabulary. Not like what happened to me last year, a classmate of mine said APATHY and blood went flowing down my nose (Of course it is an exaggeration). If I read, I will learn and if I learn, I can be the best. Second, I should write more essays  so that it can help as a practice to my writing skills. Lastly, focus and listen to the professor where in my part is very hard because I’m not good with listening and attending to what my professors are saying.

Writing is a very hard task for anyone like me who is practicing a CARABAO ENGLISH kind of grammar. I need to set specific goals in order to achieve my wants as a student. Maybe if I take English seriously, I can be the next person to be given with the Pulitzer Award. I am like any other superheroes in comic books. Like Batman, Superman, Spiderman and the like, I also have a secret identity, an identity that would like to be better not only as a normal student in a University, but to also become one of the prestigious writers of the world. But unlike them I am aLASALLIAN, are you a LASALLIAN?

But unlike them I am a LASALLIAN, are you a LASALLIAN?

V. Diagnostic Essay

From the previous years, many reports already stated the increasing number of children who are inclined to video games. They say that children are already losing their focus on to how they should meet with their requirements in school or to how be socially acquainted with others. Unfortunately, despite of the increasing reports about the said problem, psychiatric associations still do not treat the addiction as an official diagnosis as a problem or hindrance to their development.

Children nowadays are bombarded with projects, activities, and involvements that push them to their limits until such time that they fail to enjoy and have some leisure time for themselves. Parents give their children time to relax in a way that they can cope up with such activities. Children use this time of relaxation in playing video or computer games. But, because parents also have activities of their own, they fail to recognize the growing addiction of their children to video games until such time that these children already neglect their social life just to win a battle in a  video game. There are also time when children apply their 'video gaming' in real life. For example, a child becomes physically abusive to his playmates because he is a great warrior from the famous game "Warcraft" of DOTA or he literally shoots another boy because he thinks that this boy is a terrorist from the game "Counter Strike". On a deeper level, children tend to be socially isolated from others in such a way that they do not know how to react to daily news or cope up with the 'talk-of-the-town'. For example, an 18-year old boy acts like a 9-year old one because he spends all his hours playing and playing games. Lastly, the effect of gaming addiction that totally bothers the people especially parents is the fact that children are willing to sacrifice or lose a life of another person just to satisfy their wants to finish and be the "champ" of the game. Research says that more children addicted to gaming are ready to risk their life in order to play. In accordance, a kid kills or burns his parents because his parents tell him to stop playing. With these reports, many are still in surprise that such organizations still tend to ignore it.

Children are now threatened to lose their social life because of video games. In conclusion, even if organizations ignore this problem, it is up to the parents' responsibility to control their children from the said addiction. It is up to them on how they will assure that they can change their children's way of thinking. And last, these children should also think to themselves if what will happen to them if they will continue playing. They should also have the courage to do their part in controlling themselves so that they can stop or prevent it form ruining their life until the end because it will be their loss if they let video games to overcome their life. These children should make sure that in many ways, they can balance their gaming to any otheractivities of their life which are school, family, friends and relaxation. You, yes you. Will you let gaming ruin your life?

EXTENDED DEFINITION ESSAY

It can give them the awareness on how people try to change their life and how they make possibilities to live a WONDERFUL life.

Help! I Hate Writing

aaaaaFirst of all, I hate writing. And besides you are doing it for yourself not for anyone that is around you." Because of what my father said, I tried to forget first my hate in English and focus on what I want: To be a Successful CPA Lawyer.

aaaaaSo what is the main purpose of this course? Basically, it yearns for me to learn more, improve more, and develop more things that I need to be prepared of what is supposed to be happening in the outside world. It is as if our guide to become the best that I can be especially in communication. And just like what Rexona is saying in their famous line: “I WON’T LET YOU DOWN.” I think that is what my teacher is also telling me. That she won’t let me down in the sense that because of her, I can now surpass my hate with English and become the best Inglesero in the class.

aaaaaIn order fo me to be better with my writing, I should first set specific goals. It can also help me be updated of what is really changing in the world right now.

aaaaaSo how will I achieve my goals other than writing this essay? First, like what other students want to do, I should read more books and other reading materials.  If I read these materials, the words that I digest may help me improve my vocabulary. Not like what happened to me last year, a classmate of mine said APATHY and blood went flowing down my nose (Of course it is an exaggeration). If I read, I will Learn and if I learn, I can be the best. Second, I should write more essays  so that it can help as a practice to my writing skills. Lastly, focus and listen to the professor where in my part is very hard because I’m not good with listening and attending to what my professors are saying.

aaaaaWriting is a very hard task for anyone like me who is practising a CARABAO ENGLISH kind of grammar. But unlike them I am a LASALLIAN, are you a LASALLIAN?
